DIY Tulle Pom Poms | Party Planning

|

We had a wonderful launch party for the last week, and I just wanted to share another DIY project from the party decor. Since the party was ballerina-inspired, I wanted to create something with all this coral-pink tulle, but I didn’t want to be too literal with tutus, so I made decorative tulle pom poms. I tried a number of methods, but this is the one I liked the best in the end, because it was really light on the sewing but created a lovely, puffy round ball in the end.

All you need is a pile of tulle (by the yard or from a spool could both work) and a needle and thread.

Step One: Cut your tulle into many, many layers that are all roughly the same size and shape. I say roughly because these pompoms are fairly forgiving, so you can get away with pretty large margins in variation and just trim the pom pom in the end. The more layers you have, the denser your pom pom will be. You can also experiment with different shapes such as scallops or zig zags at the ends– they’ll create slightly different petal-like effects. Pictured in the first row are pieces for two different pom poms I was making.

Step Two: Take one tulle sheet at a time and scrunch it up, accordion-fold style, lengthwise. It’s best to fold them roughly back and forth rather than curling it up into a spiral. Then fold your piece in half just to find the middle and make sure the two ends match in length.

Step Three: Thread your needle through the middle point, making sure you pick up all those accordion fold layers. I used a doubled thread for better strength.

Step Four: Repeat steps two and three with all of the sheets you cut out. Keep pushing the tulle bits together toward the center as you add more pieces to your thread. You can always run your needle around through the middle points again to reinforce the centers and create a strong core to your pom pom.

Step Five: Knot and tie off the pom pom when you’ve added enough layers! I kept my thread long so I could tie the pompoms to my backdrop, but you can also trim it short. You can also trim any uneven pieces you might have.

There you have it! Tutu pom poms in various sizes! Super simple and oh so pretty.

Thanks to my intern Rosa Guerra for taking the above photos of me and for helping make some tulle pom poms too.
