Jasmine Curtis | Art for Art | San Francisco
Since the beginning of 2014, I have been working on my year-long personal project, Art for Art. Once a month, I find a fellow photographer whose work I admire, and I photograph them; they photograph me. View the full set of previous shoots in the series here: Art for Art.
August’s shoot was with my intern Jasmine Curtis. Jasmine is currently a student at Cornell University, so she just had a brief internship with me while she was home in the Bay Area for the summer.
Our Styles
Anna: When I first saw Jasmine’s photography, I noticed her use of interesting compositions and contrast. I would say my photographs tend to be softer and lighter in tone and feeling, but I can’t wait to see how Jasmine’s photography and her style develop over the years.
Jasmine: I try to capture unique, candid moments. Aesthetically, I am a big fan of contrast and tend to love editing my images in black and white. Anna’s style is clean, with simple imagery and a light and airy feeling.
The Shoot
Anna: We met up in SoMa, San Francisco and just did a quick, casual shoot around the area. Actually, this was the first time I did a whole portrait session on my new Sony A7s mirrorless camera. I think it stood up pretty well, though I definitely felt limited only having a 35mm/2.8 lens when I’m usually shooting with a 50/1.2 most of the time. Jasmine did great jumping in and shooting too. It’s been a great summer working with her!
Jasmine: The shoot was great! I’d love to work with Anna more in the future. I’ve learned so much from her and am truly thankful for the time she has spent to teach me everything photography-related.
Lessons Learned?
Anna: I always learn so much from teaching, and I am slowly trying to learn how to be better in front of the camera too. But I think one of the biggest pieces is learning how to describe light. To me, so much of working with natural light is just intuitive, but it’s so helpful to be able to break it down and describe that process to someone else.
Jasmine: I’ve been learning how to see light and use it to my advantage. I still need to work more on posing and directing models.
Below are a couple of my favorites from Jasmine!
