Old Ladies Knitting Club
I’ve known how to knit and crochet since elementary school, and it’s often been a fun hobby to keep myself occupied in the winter. But about a year ago, I started to think it might be fun to turn this solitary activity into a club. So in February, I started it up: the Old Ladies’ Knitting Club. A couple of us met in person at my office in San Francisco, and we were joined via videochat by another group that met up together in LA and a third group from Cincinnati. I organized the projects and supplies, everyone learned together, whether in person or virtually. We made scarves, pillows, poufs, and some of us also made blankets, sweaters, and more. My home is basically overflowing with knit goods (and unfinished projects too) at this point.
Our first project, below: Alice and Karen beam in from Ohio, while Nancy and Tiffany join in person with the LA team (Jenny, Connie, and Pei) on screen. We learned the basics of knitting and made infinity scarves.
Our second project: pillows, made with this cool woven knit pattern.
I love my giant oversized blanket, which cost about $200 in supplies alone, but it is pretty adorable, and very much like hugging a baby sheep.
Our pillow-making meeting! With everyone’s different jersey colors.
Mayline and Vicki joined in from Chicago too.
Below, Liz and Jess working on their projects, and Pei with her finished scarf.
A big hoodie-cardigan project I took on myself. It came out a bit funky, but it was my first sweater!
And finally (for now), my gumdrop-shaped pouf! It’s been really fun turning what used to be a solitary activity into a social event. Hopefully I have time to organize some more Old Ladies’ Knitting Club gatherings soon! There are balls of yarn and unfinished projects just lurking in my basket, waiting to be finished.
Any fellow knitters out there? Anyone dying to join our club? Let me know! Check out the #oldladiesknittingclub hashtag on instagram for more of our photos.
