Ann Arbor

|

Off we go, on our second Midwest trip of the summer! Alex is on his quest to visit all 30 MLB stadiums, so we decided to travel to Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh all in one fell swoop. But first things first, we pay a visit to my hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Go Blue!

Old plane, but convenient little iPad holder in the seat backs. And knitting a bunch of puffs on the plane ride over.

First meal of the trip, the iconic Zingerman’s Deli.

We stayed at the Graduate Hotel, right on the edge of the University of Michigan campus. Very nicely themed!

Then we spent a good few hours browsing the huge M Den to gear ourselves up for football! Oh yeah, pretty last minute we decided to add the season opener Michigan football game to our itinerary.

Cute college town!

Day two, we decided to take those hotel bikes out for a spin. In our new Michigan outfits.

Birthplace!

We went over to the arboretum for a nice little walk and happened upon the Washtenaw Audubon Society.

And some little fairy houses in the woods.

A quick jaunt around campus. The diag.

And the Law Quad!

Frita Batidos. I was especially a fan of the batidos, Cuban milkshakes!

Very cute shop, Rock Paper Scissors. Thanks to Tiffany, Ali, and Julianne all for some very excellent Ann Arbor recs!

Shinola Detroit. We will be seeing more of this company!

Literati Bookstore.

Two shops in Kerrytown: a yarn shop called Spun and a home goods shop called Found.

Then dinner with Julianne and her boyfriend at Pacific Rim!

Followed by beers and a fantasy draft at Bill’s Beer Garden down the street.

And after an interlude in Detroit, we were back in Ann Arbor on Saturday for the big game! Despite being born a Michigan fan, I didn’t actually go to school there and have never been to Michigan Stadium, a.k.a. “The Big House.” We arrived plenty early and snagged some nearby parking in a random grass lot. Then we got to saunter through the very elaborate tailgate setups at the high school across the street.

It’s like Shibuya crossing.

This is the biggest stadium in North America. Third in the world only to stadiums in India and North Korea. It holds over 100,000 people and regularly sells out. Pretty incredible!

First glimpses!

So many football players.

Lines for everything are incredibly long when there are a hundred thousand people involved.

Hail to the Victors!

So many people. So much fun!

Touchdown! So many touchdowns!

We had to leave early, but not before Michigan secured a 30+ point lead. But then we hit the road to drive to Cleveland so we could catch a baseball game the same day, haha. More to come on this whirlwind baseball tour!
