Fes, Morocco
It’s a maze of a city, with narrow, meandering alleys and high walls all around. We initially thought we might just wander and explore Fes ourselves, but as soon as we arrived and saw what we were in for, we quickly changed our minds and joined the walking tour that Godwin had booked for the next morning. That, it turned out, would be rife with its own complications, but that’s a story best told in person. Suffice it to say, misunderstandings in Morocco were plentiful and never uninteresting, but everything always worked out in the end! See below for our explorations of the old, old city of Fes.

Pottery!
Moroccan mosaics are made from glazed tiles that are then chiseled into various shapes and reassembled by hand.
The tanneries of Fes… it looks much nicer than it smells.
The mint leaves are to help mask the smell of the goat skins and all that leather processing below.
Of course then it was time for the Moroccan rugs…
I walked away with a Moroccan blanket, and that was all. While the guided tour was a great way to see all the important parts of Fes, I really wish we’d had a second day to go exploring and shopping for all the stuff we had only briefly seen. But it was on to the desert for us! Next post coming soon…
