Louder than the Lies Book Launch
A huge congratulations to Ellie Yang Camp on the launch of her remarkable book, Louder than the Lies! In a frank, conversational manner, Ellie offers such important insight and inspiration for Asian Americans on identity, solidarity, and self-love. I was so happy to be able to photograph two of her Bay Area book launch events. First, the inaugural event at On Waverly, an amazing Asian American woman-owned shop in San Francisco’s Chinatown. And Second, her hometown event at Books Inc. in Mountain View.
Curtis Chinn of the InfatuAsian Podcast interviewed Ellie for the book talk.
I should also mention that Ellie’s amazing jacket, which perfectly matches her book cover, is by designer Joolee and was purchased at On Waverly.
And then On Waverly surprised Ellie with a cake…
decorated with many copies of her own face and the book cover, hahaha. Excellent.
Book signings! As a professional calligrapher, Ellie really went all out with her personalizations and signatures.
One for Alex and me too.
And in fact, a whole contingent of friends was in attendance at this wonderful event.
Next, Ellie had her hometown bookstore event at the Books Inc. in Mountain View. Such a treat to meet so many of her friends and family at this event!
I loved how Ellie spoke about this whole book project as an endeavor to find and build the community and support structures that she felt she needed for herself. That included not just a writing partner, which she found in co-moderator of this event Ko Kim, but also a therapist and a yoga practice. These are her yoga instructors, shown below. This reflected her entire book as not just a theoretical framework but a pragmatic one. It’s full of hope and practical advice on how to move forward in this white supremacist world we live in.
Such a huge turnout, and a great showing of community.
Including fellow authors, including Helen H. Hsu, author of The Healing Trauma Workbook for Asian Americans and Joanna Ho, author of Eyes that Kiss in the Corners and most recently, We Who Produce Pearls.
Ellie’s parents were also in attendance!
So inspiring to photograph these book launch events. Congratulations again, Ellie! Learn more about Ellie Yang Camp and Louder than the Lies and purchase your copy of the book here.
