Cinque Terre, Italy
Cinque Terre, the ‘five lands’ in Italian, is a series of five fishing villages balanced charmingly and precariously along the coast of northern Italy. We took a train from Venice to the nearby city of La Spezia, and from there, we took the small train that connects the five towns. It’s such a beautiful place. I’d love to visit again.
Our airbnb host in La Spezia shows us our balcony.
Dinner with our travel crew in La Spezia at L’osteria Della Corte: Mike, Kristin, me, and Sherry.
We headed out early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds. Vendors were just beginning to set up their shops in La Spezia as we walked to the train station.
We started at Monterosso, the northernmost town, and headed out for the only hike open between the five towns: Monterosso to Vernazza. All the other trails had been closed due to landslides.
There were many, many steps along the way, but it was totally worth it for the views.
Vernazza.
I paid a euro to climb up the tower for some more views over the town.
One of my favorite moments: taking off my very dirty shoes and dipping our feet in to the Ligurian Sea.
Along the way we met three other Americans on the trail, and we all grabbed lunch together.
Then it was on to the third town, Corniglia. It was a ton of stairs and a very small town.
We then skipped down to the fifth town of Riomaggiore before heading back up to the fourth town, Manarola, for dinner and sunset.
Manarola was probably my favorite of all the towns.
It was especially charming at dusk. Sigh.
