Isolayered

|

Last year, in the midst of shelter-in-place, I set out with a group of photographer friends to work on a collaborative art project titled Isolayered. As we have since returned to some version of normalcy and then gone back towards isolation again, I’m reflecting on the beauty and the difficulty of community when connection becomes tenuous. Below are just a few of the images we captured.

Artists’ Statement, April – May, 2020:

So much of our work as a collective revolves around humans, collaboration, and experience. Feeling the weight of this COVID isolation, we leaned heavily on each other and sought a way to continue creating and collaborating.

Each photographer shot a roll of 35mm film and then passed it off to the next photographer to re-expose. Not knowing what each photographer had, or would, encounter, every frame was a mystery, and we embraced the experimental nature of the project.

The result was a series of surprising overlays and interactions: the mundane shrouding the surreal, obscure details of everyday life, and ways in which our days were different, or very much the same. The moments from our new realities mingled on film, as we found a way to share space from afar.
