Minneapolis
I have nothing but love for Minneapolis, even if they defeated us in both basketball and baseball the week that we were visiting. We were following our San Francisco Giants on the road to the home of the Minneapolis Twins and checking off stadium 28 of 30 on Alex’s MLB ballpark quest. So close! Only two more after this (Atlanta & Toronto). We stayed in an Airbnb close enough to walk to Target Field, and in a generally hipster area with shops and restaurants nearby too, but we still rented a car to explore the neighborhoods further afield. It was a very brief visit, but I loved the arts scene, the strength of indigenous and immigrant communities, and all of the cute craft shops we visited along the way.

First stop, Matt’s Bar for the famed Jucy Lucy, a hamburger with the cheese inside the patty. Pretty good.

Very cute craft & gift shop, Digs. I bought some yarn and a bunch of buttons from here.

The Walker Art Center with an outdoor sculpture garden.

The most iconic sculpture with a spoon and cherry was walled off for repair.

It was a free day to visit inside too.

George Floyd. With renewed resonance today.

While the Giants were playing the Twins the Warriors were playing the Wolves in the playoffs. It didn’t go well for either of our San Francisco teams.

Down to the river for dinner at Owamni by the Sioux Chef.

Really wonderful meal featuring modern Indigenous foods. Their mission talks about Indigenous perspectives in America and the rejection of settler colonialism. Very salient to reflect on these days.

Backstory Coffee Roasters. A beautiful space.

Diane’s Place for lunch– a Hmong American restaurant just dubbed Food & Wine Magazine’s restaurant of the year for 2025.

Highly recommend the Hmong Sausage and the Asian Chicken Noodle Soup.

Nooo

More craft shops!

And a baby shop!

Starting my pineapple baby romper!

Time to go to the ballpark!

The best part about following your team on the road is arriving early to watch batting practice and getting much easier access for autographs too.

Jung Hoo Lee signature for our stamp book! We collect an official stamp from each of the ballparks we visit.

Mike Yastrzemski talking with Hunter Pence pregame. It ended up on instagram afterwards.

Ballpark food, and the beginnings of a yellow baby romper.

The next morning Alex went for a run along the river. Alas, the Warriors did not actually trade for Giannis as was much rumored in the last few days.

A really lovely farmers market at the foot of this Gold Medal Flour tower. As always, bringing our Vernon Street Farm tote on the road.

Lots of local farm goods and crafts too. And fishing lures! A sign of the setting.

Camper full of wool and yarn goods.

The Minnesota Center for Book Arts

A lovely little display for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. And I found this super cute hot pot print, which we brought back from Minneapolis to SF to give to our friends who live in LA… via our friend who actually brought it back with him to Minneapolis because they were all there for the weekend. Only to find out the artist is actually from SF as well… so in other words, it changed hands five times and went in two giant loops from California to Minneapolis and back!

Final lunch in Minneapolis… Young Joni. Korean American woodfired pizza!

And one last craft shop, the very quirky StevenBe which is a whole house that is quite literally filled with yarn and notions. I picked up another set of knitting needles to be able to complete my romper on the road!

Farewell, Minneapolis. We had a very lovely time. Here I am, knitting away on the flight back.
