Graced With Light | Grace Cathedral, San Francisco
Stepping into the nave of Grace Cathedral, I let the sense of awe wash over me. It would be enough to walk into any church this beautiful, with the elegant stained glass and the expansive space, but there’s something extra special here: twenty miles of beautifully colored ribbons hanging from the ceiling. It is quietly spectacular, perfectly fitting, and yet unexpected.
The ribbons are an art installation titled Graced With Light by Anne Patterson. They were originally scheduled for display through the fall of 2013, but thanks to their popularity, the installation was extended through February, 2014. If it were up to me, they would just stay up forever.
The ribbons are incredibly photogenic with their lines streaking across the image, but the photos still fail to capture the glistening of the light against the slight swaying of the ribbons and the beautiful colors dancing through the stained glass. There’s still nothing quite like being there in person.
My absolute favorite image from the day is below, to the right. What a perfect moment that encapsulates the awe of the space.
