Shawna Yang Ryan | Author Portraits
I first met and photographed Shawna six years ago, when her first book Water Ghosts had just been released by Penguin Press. Now her second novel has been completed and is available for preordering: Green Island. The book has been Shawna’s labor of love over the last decade and is a work of historic fiction set against the backdrop of Taiwanese and Taiwanese American history from 1947 through the early 2000s. I’m definitely looking forward to getting my hands on my own copy of the book.
Though Shawna now resides and teaches in Hawaii, she came back to meet me on the Berkeley campus where we did her shoot six years ago, and we updated her author headshots and created these lovely portraits below:
