Green Island by Shawna Yang Ryan

|

On February 28, 1947 began the infamous events of “228,” a widespread massacre of tens of thousands of Taiwanese by the Nationalist (KMT) government that had recently arrived from China. The 228 Massacre became a taboo topic in the subsequent years of martial law that extended through the 1980s and had ripple effects that were felt in subsequent generations. The incident serves as the catalyst and the background against which Shawna Yang Ryan’s new novel Green Island is set. It’s an incredibly compelling and evocative novel, and I’m so proud to be a friend of the author and a tiny part of this journey.

If you follow me on instagram, you might already know that Shawna asked me to photograph her author’s headshots and used one of my portraits for the book jacket. It’s so cool to think my photos are circulating around on tens of thousands of hardcover books! I can only imagine what it’s like for Shawna to know this wonderful book she’s labored over for over a decade is now in the hands of inspired readers everywhere.
