Sherry Lu | Art for Art | San Francisco & Vancouver

| |

Since the beginning of 2014, I have been working on my year-long personal project, Art for Art. Once a month, I find a fellow photographer whose work I admire, and I photograph them; they photograph me. View the full set of previous shoots in the series here: Art for Art.

For the month of May, I got to do an awesome two-part Art for Art shoot with my friend Sherry Lu. We shot in both San Francisco and Vancouver as our travels to each other’s cities lined up perfectly!

Our Styles:

Anna: Sherry is wonderfully quirky and happy and loves her polka dots and bow ties. I first got connected with her through a fellow photographer because of my Pointe of View ballerina project; Sherry has also been photographing ballerinas in her personal project: A Ballet Affair. I think our photography styles have a lot of overlap.

Sherry: My style is happy, girly, natural light-y, and generally focused on the person. Anna’s style is colourful, bright, and fun! And also very girly and filled with natural light.

The Shoot

Anna: I loved doing shoots together in both our cities, San Francisco and Vancouver. For San Francisco (above), we grabbed some lunch in Hayes Valley and then went for a little shoot around Alamo Square. For Vancouver (below), we met up on Granville Island and wandered around the market and artisan shops. Both shoots were lighthearted and fun!

Sherry: It was super fun! :) I enjoyed it a lot. At first I was hesitant (and quite awkward) in front of the camera. But Anna had me warmed up in no time. Seriously, but part 2 (in Vancouver), I was READY to be photographed. It was also a great experience to be in front of a camera to get a sense of how clients feel. And learning ways to coach / be coached through that initial discomfort. Doing Art for Art in two parts in two cities was also kind of fun! :) BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!

Lessons Learned

Anna: It was actually not too difficult to set up two shoots in two different cities! Sherry was really easy to work with, and I felt very comfortable in front of her lens. I’m glad to have kept up the momentum on my Art for Art projects, as we’ve made it almost halfway through the year.

Sherry: I picked up some posing tips from Anna. :) And it’s quite fun to shoot each other.
