Behind the Scenes | Pointe of View

|

Every Monday, I feature an image and backstory from my Pointe of View series.

Come along behind the scenes of the Pointe of View series for a glimpse of what it was like to work with all these amazing dancers in spectacular locations all around the world.

One of the most popular questions I get asked about these shoots is how I found the ballerinas, and the answer is: the internet. The first three shoots I did in San Francisco, I found the dancers through a Craigslist posting, but everyone after that was found through Facebook. If I knew I would be traveling to a city– say, New York– I would either post messages on all the New York ballet schools’ and companies’ walls I could find on Facebook, or I would search for “ballet” in people’s profiles, and dancers with mutual friends of mine would show up. Basically, I messaged everyone I could, and invariably, at least one connection would stick or a friend would pull through with a reference. I found Lexi in New York through the Gelsey Kirkland Academy. I found Hannah in Ireland through her mom’s ballet company– the Coastal Ballet School. I found Kaori in Japan through our mutual friend Nadia in Portland. And the list goes on.

I feel really lucky to live in an age where such things– finding dancers in various cities around the world– are not only possible, they’re quite simple. Take this to heart, fellow project-makers and creators. You, too, can harness the power of the internet to make something wonderful.

Enjoy!

Many thanks to all the helpers who have come along to assist on all these shoots! It would not have been possible without you.
